My own urologist suggested I view the two as types of external radiation which they are and not necessarily as totally different forms of treatment. My decision was my decision, yours will be yours based on your situation and your preferences. This book will help you think about the things you need to be thinking about.

One person found this helpful. I would recommend this book to anyone who has been diagnosed with prostate cancer or has a family history. Physicians typically do not have the time or ability to explain everything to us, the patient, as we do not have all the questions that need to be asked. Most Men are faced with an somewhat fast and overwhelming situation, once diagnosed.
This book really assisted me in making an "Informed" decision. By the end of my consultation with the oncologist we had both agreed that surgery was the answer for me and not radiation. The feeling of making a very informed decision is an incredible feeling, it felt like a heavy weight was lifted off my shoulders'.
The day I had my surgery this month my younger brother was diagnosed with prostate cancer, the information I learned from Dr. McHough's book helped my brother make an informed decision, though I am still sending him a copy of this book. Its biographical and personal to McHugh so it There's levels this book is good. Its biographical and personal to McHugh so it definitely doesn't come across academic. You clearly get the message you need to pay attention to your cancer, and filter everyone's feedback about what to do with the particulars of your situation. That said, I found the writing style repetitive, even for a short book.
McHugh did a great service in helping those of us who have been recently diagnosed with prostate cancer. To have a urologist's sincere and honest perspective on this was priceless. My criticisms which are negligible compared to what this book has to offer are- 1. No real discussion of the newer types of MRIs that are being done with high diagnostic value, or genetic testing of the unstained cells from the biopsy.
McHugh had his procedure eight years ago, so maybe this isn't as current as it could be. I found the last chapter long and not very necessary.
The Kindle edition of this book was replete with typos. With all that being said, I do feel this is an absolute must read for anyone who has been diagnosed with prostate cancer and needs perspective and direction.

I liked this book. While there are certainly more technical books out there, this was a good balance of the technical and personal side of decision making. I will be interested in seeing the "5 years later" and "10 years later" editions to see how everything turns out.
Frequently bought together
When I was diagnosed with prostate cancer I bought several books. The value in McHugh's book is that he had the advantage of being not only a urologist, but also a prostate cancer patient. Walsh's book is like the Bible for prostate cancer information. It's big and full of useful information. Good luck with whatever procedure to you decide on. I choose surgery, and part of my decision was based on what I had learned from McHugh's book.
If you're buying this book you are probably in a quandary as to what procedure to opt for. This book with be a big help in making that decision. Again all the best.

The announcement, which was not made until nearly 30 minutes into the program, was part of a conversation between James and Gray.
