We all know this critique, sadly Darian does not go into any effort to show any proof of this.
The New Black, Mourning, Melancholia and Depression by Darian Leader
What he does do is give genealogy of grief and melancholy with lots of examples from the fields of psychiatric, anthropology, art and psychological theory. In this way he hopes to show that Darian is a psychoanalysist who wants to ring the bell. In this way he hopes to show that a lot of symptoms of depression are more likely to be rooted in grief or melancholy. This is rather interesting to read. He gives descriptions of mechanisms involved with grief or melancholy.
Like that of identification with the dead that result in people not able to do anything, or even dying. An example of this are the people who die shortly after their partner. What is needed in the case of loss of a close one are the following four 'steps': Introducing a symbolic order this creates distance, and your own reality 2.
Kill the object 3. Separation between the image of loved one and the position of that loved one for our life 4. Giving up the image that they had of us. In this process there are a lot of things that can go wrong, that results in symptoms of depression. But, the case is that the causes for the symptom are something else, that means that the psychologist should look in to this causes. To the persons own personal truth.
Something that does not happen today in psychology. This is where I mean that Damian Leader goes wrong. He does a lot of medicine- and Cognitive therapy basing, because they are only mend to threat the symptoms.

I think this image is oversimplified. For example, cognitive therapy is a method that treats symptoms by looking at behavioural patterns that are not practical for the life of the client and then the client and therapist try to change those patterns. So far this can look like only treating the symptoms, but I do not believe that this does not involve looking at how these patterns came to be. So in the process people learn about there personal truths, why there symptoms are there. The same goes for medicine. Only using medicine suppress the symptoms, but treatment always involves talking, going into why you need these medicine, and in most cases the medicine is just used as a 'kick-start' to get moving again.
The fact that Darian gives such a one-sided view on current treatments makes me suspicious that he deals with some resentment. What could have been a balanced investigation into causes coming from grief and melancholy turns into a monologue. That coming for a man pleating for a new language and dialogue, is a missed chance for me.
Jul 29, Maxy. For some reason it took me ages to get through, I think this was probably both because it was so thought-provoking and also because the arguments weren't always very clearly structured. Still it's quite brilliant.
Jul 13, Christian Carbone rated it really liked it. This book interested me by the title. The author starts out making his point vehemently that the drug companies want you to be depressed so they can make lots of money, which is partially true. But, this book then began to become immensely enlightening for me personally. Relating to feelings of loss and over self-abuse, I was very much relating to the melancholic attributes. Also, the subjects of mourning and dealing with losing a loved one. This was all incredibly poignant.
If you are going t This book interested me by the title. If you are going through any of these life-changing occurrences, or may be in the future, I recommend this book.
The middle becomes somewhat overly clinical, but still enthralling. Feb 01, Oscar rated it really liked it. Darian Leader's book examines the process of mourning largely from a Freudian perspective, but also incorporates other ideological slants. Leader also differentiates between mourning as being a state in which one is going through the process of losing a love one with melancholia which is defined as a more persistent state of sadness. While the book does deal with the concept and process of depression, it mostly places the concept of depression within mourning and melancholia as opposed to dealing with a greater overview of depression.

Leader provides an interesting discussion which really shines while dealing with the process of mourning. He draws from different cultural perspectives, films, literature, and studies in order to show how people can successfully or unsuccessfully cope with the process of mourning. The book also examines how a person's life and personality along with their relationship with the deceased can affect the mourning process.
As a study and possible guide of the mourning process, Leader book provides several insights and while this is a difficult topic to deal with, I found the book thought provoking and worth reading. Darian suggests we need to redefine depression "as a set of symptoms that derive from complex and always different human stories". The psychoanalyst, Darian Leader, foregrounds the importance of the meanings individuals come to attach to life histories and specific events. The curative powers of art can help them with this. Oct 12, Adrian added it. Psychoanalyst Leader separates modern depression into two older categories; mourning and melancholia.
He despairs of the reliance on drugs to treat mental illness these days and plumps for talk therapy. He has interesting things to say about anger displacement but his willingness to accept that the unconscious will always reveal deeper truth isn't persuasive on the whole. Especially when dream analysis is the center of this therapy. And is melancholia always related to the death of a loved one? Leader implies that it is. He's the expert but I remain unconvinced by a lot of this. Nov 29, Nuno Carrilho rated it really liked it.
